Chapter 160 Confrontation

Roland had already corrected designs for the Revolver’s bullet a long time ago. After all, circular lead bullets and loose gunpowder were an arrangement that was simply too archaic. Taking Anna’s processing capacity into account, it should be feasible for her to directly manufacture the shell for the ammunition. The problem was that there didn’t exist a reliable primer, which could light the cartridge of the bullet that was filled with black powder.

The outer shell of the ammunition was generally made out of mercury fulminate which was very sensitive to impacts. When the firing pin was pulled and it hit the base of the bullet, the mercury fulminate would ignite, which would ignite the black powder, ejecting the bullet from the chamber.

It was such a pity that even after breaking his head over it, he still couldn’t recall the necessary raw materials he needed for the mercury fulminate. From a literal point of view, he would definitely need nitric acid and mercury. However, if he looked at the result of the chemical equation he had written down, it became apparent that these two substances would only produce nitric acid together.

In addition, knowing the raw materials wasn’t equally to having a smooth production of usable products. Roland would still have to discover the right concentration and temperature for the reactive process, and whether he still needed to add another catalyst or not add one, was also a crucial point he had to figure out before finishing the product.

Moreover, because of the sensitive properties of mercury, manufacturing it was considered a very dangerous process and if it exploded one could easily lose some fingers, so Roland was afraid of trying it out personally.

So, Roland had to settle for the second-best option, using a metal ammunition case but keeping the old flintlock ignition, which would require that the spark could enter the interior of the ammunition case to ignite the gunpowder. Therefore, he had to leave a hole at the bottom of the ammunition case, but he still had to find a method which would prevent leakage of black powder.

Obviously, these two points were contradictory to each other: the greater the opening, the faster the leakage of gunpowder. Yet if the opening is too small, it would become too difficult for the spark to ignite the gunpowder.

He needed something that would allow the spark to ignite the powder, while at the same time blocking the hole, to prevent the leakage of gunpowder.

Roland first thought was pyroxylin, which was also known as nitrocellulose.

It was also one of the few chemicals which he still remembered and could also be used for weapons because it had such a simple production method: the cotton had just to be soaked in two strong kinds of acids. The two acids it used were the commonly available sulfuric acid and nitric acid, and there would be no danger involved in producing them. Even though he still had wanted to wait for the hopefully soon, arriving alchemist, but now, where he had the deadline of seven days, he decided to roll up his sleeves and get to work.

Taking the quill, Roland began to write down the idea he had already in his head for a long time.

The first ingredient he needed was cotton, and the best cotton yarn were the ones which weren’t weaved or dyed and it was exactly this kind that he had brought back with him from his visit to the Duke’s castle, and was now also piling up within his castle’s warehouses. Cotton yarn needed to be skimmed. Otherwise the grease attached to its surface would prevent the nitrification.

He was already familiar with the stuff required for removing the oil, it was sodium hydroxide, which was also commonly known as caustic soda. At the same time, it was also one of the raw materials needed for making soap: For producing soap, one had to add fat to caustic soda, and then stir it until it became solid. Afterward it could be used as washing soap. But Roland has been too busy developing the industrial and agricultural technology and with defending Border Town against foreign enemies, that he hadn’t found any time to invent any such commodities.

As for how he was meant to produce caustic soda, the simplest method would probably be the electrolysis of salt water. So the Prince discovered, that in order to create the new types of bullets, he first had to develop a DC Generator.

*

Ashes was walking along the Shishui River, feeling somewhat depressed.

Since the other witches knew that she had come to Border Town to bring the witches of the Witch Cooperation Association away, their attitude towards her had cooled down, a lot, and there was no longer any signs left of the warm welcome she had received last night.

Moreover, she had also noted that most of the witches were practicing their ability in the castle backyard, which showed that Roland had also found a way to avoid the suffering from the demonic bite. Originally Ashes had wanted to use this vital piece of intelligence to show her good will to the other witches, but her plan was unexpectedly shattered right from the beginning. So in addition to telling them the disadvantages and advantages of leaving Border Town, she had nearly nothing else left for persuading them to move.

What surprised Ashes the most was, even though Roland Wimbledon’s appearance had changed very little since the time she last saw him, every gesture from him now contained an indescribable temperament, completely out of tune with the image he previous held of being a dandy.

How could this be? He had previously definitely belonged to the incompetent class, during business appointments he would always think first about finding a way to escape, never standing up for others, and even if the problem was clearly caused by him, he was also too afraid to take on any responsibility. That time when he had thought about harassing her, she only needed to throw him a hateful look, to make him fall to the ground in panic. But she had later heard from Tilly, that he had claimed that he had fallen by accidently, and that the 5th Princess was at fault for it. After all why would she even find such an ugly woman as a guard?

From that time on, Ashes’ view of the 4th Prince had fallen to the lowest possibility ranking.

Previously she had believed that such a type of person would be easy for her to handle, but during today’s negotiation she had failed utterly to gain the upper hand. Especially when the other side suggested a one-on-one competition, she had discovered that her threat of using military force didn’t work any longer, since the other side hadn’t thought about escaping. Instead, it might even have had the complete opposite effect. If she had threatened him at that time personally, in addition to reducing the witch’s positive impression of her, it would not have had any other results.

Ashes sighed, if she just could be as smart as Tilly, every problem that appeared before her could have been all smoothly solved. The moment she encountered a situation such as this, she would surely have been able to come up with a solution to this, right?

If she hadn’t wanted to help Tilly as much as possible, Ashes really would have taken the next ship heading to Silver City and also leave the Kingdom of Graycastle as soon as possible.

Unconsciously, she had already left the area of the town, she was no longer be able to see those green wheat field on the other side of the river, but instead she was looking at the unclaimed woodland.

When Ashes was already ready to turn back, she suddenly felt the fluctuation of magic behind her, subconsciously turning her head, she could barely see a knife heading towards her cheek, taking advantage of her horizontal movement. The magic fluctuation had transformed into a surging billow, and Ashes suddenly felt a piercing pain coming from her cheek, the other person’s systematic and logical moves were clearly nothing like one would expect to come from an ordinary person. Ashes no longer hesitated, completely dumping her passive attitude, to concentrate on avoiding the dagger coming to her from the front, she put all her strength on one foot and catapulted out of the way.

However, the other side just disappeared into thin air, and within a blink of an eye, she had already appeared behind herself, leaving Ashes totally unable to follow her opponent’s movement.

She drew her sword and rotated in a circle. Turning so fast that she created a dull whistling sound with the sword, causing a large amount of dust to raise up from the ground. This attack from her had no dead areas and was able to scoop up any kind of threat, but in front of this unknown enemy she was facing, even this tricky attack of her’s ended in a complete failure. When her swords swept through the attacker’s previous position, there was nothing to be touched.

That’s bad, she thought to herself, straining all of the muscle in her body, ready to react to the next round of attacks from the other side, but the shadow just disappeared from in front of her.

The dust settled down slowly, while the person again appeared near Ashes, playing with the dagger she was holding in her hand.

It was Nightingale.

“Should I see this as a warning?” Ashes frowned.

“Of course not,” Nightingale said, putting her dagger back to her waist. “I just wanted to see the strength of an extraordinary.”

“Are you sure? It was more like…”

“Do you think I would force you into leaving Border Town quickly, or otherwise I would not stay polite with you?” Nightingale interrupted her. “If that was the case, what would be the difference between Cara, and me?”

Cara? Why would she mention the former leader of the Witch Cooperation Association? Ashes asked herself in confusion.

“You can rest assured that I won’t hinder you from approaching any of my sisters, and if someone is willing to leave with you, I don’t think His Royal Highness will stop you. I certainly would not…” Nightingale paused, “But if you threaten to hurt His Highness, I guarantee you that next time I won’t just be stabbing at your side anymore.” Here she grinned and then disappeared into thin air, “Enjoy your time in Border Town.”

Sure enough, you still warned me off, ah, Ashes shook her head.

    Thank you!!

  • Kuq Ku

I love Nightingale, shes prolly my fave character. I suddenly heard the song “Stand by your man” the Blues Brothers Version echoing in my head.

Im pretty sure that Nightingale is fully aware that Ashes Loyalties are firmly rooted elsewhere, that unlike her who saw the benefits that Roland could bring, not only to witches but all people.

The warning Nightingale gave, was this, I am as loyal and dedicated to this man as you are to yours, which means, regardless of Ashes intentions of luring witches away, Nightingales first priority is Roland, which speaks volumes.

  • MangoGuy

Tell you what? He should probably meet this Tilly character….

    • Kuq Ku

I think youre right, I reckon he needs to try very hard to establish an alliance with Tilly.

I dont want to see a Witch vs Witch war, it would go against everything Roland is trying to establish. He needs to try get her on board.

  • João Paulo Francisconi

Just realized something: Roland is a mechanical engineer using technology to make himself able to stand in the same league as people with superhuman ability like Ashes (Hulk), Anna (Scarlet Witch), Nightingale (Black Widow) or even warriors at the peak of physical condition like Carter (Captain America) or Iron Axe (Hawkeye). Yeap. Roland is Tony Stark, who’s also a mechanical engineer by the way.

    • Psychronia

Tony Stark does have some resemblance to original Roland too, doesn’t he?

      • João Paulo Francisconi

Besides both being mechanical engineers, I don’t think so. Tony Stark is the CEO and President of his own company, a genious ahead of his time, he is filthy rich and lives the good live. Original Roland was a employee in some black company that made him work so much he died of exaustion. He’s probably a good mechanical engineer, but the only way he would be a genious ahead of its time is if he time traveled to the past.

        • Psychronia

I meant the old prince who was a philanderer that people tended to mock.

  • DB AV

As long as the little sister isn’t a holier than thou purity sue she could be an interesting character. Because Roland despite being a reincarnator is lacking in various aspects if the little sister were to be a perfect genius without a single blemish it could turn boring.

    • DennMael

I’m hoping lil sis Tilly is the one ‘sane’ sibling of the Wimbledon children…although considering the rest its doubtful.

Part of me is also wandering if what Ashes said of her intelligence is that she might be a genius, or maybe a reincarnator who can actually compete with Roland (prince of modern era engineering vs. witch with modern era knowledge). Either way, I want Tilly and Anna to meet.

  • Kin

Looks like tilly also know about how to avoid demonic bite. I wonder if she also like mc..

    • Kuq Ku

I think shes a Witch, it makes sense, how she was able to convince other witches to join her, how would she do that when she left with so few. Garcia had been planning a lot of things behind the scenes, while Tillys activities have remained a mystery

      • DB AV

I you think about it she had Ashes as her maid/guard from a long time and I doubt a genius would not recognize a witch. She probably foresaw the fight between brothers and/or the church invasion and decided to run away, I’m still doubting if she’s simply running away or retreating for the time being.

Thanks for the chapter Roxerer and Jatz! Well I’m sure they haven’t mapped the entire world yet so maybe Tilly could find a place with no Church to start a country. I hope Roland’s demo can at least prove that they can hold their own ground even if they don’t choose to leave.

  • Oak

    Thanks for the chapter

  • phyrigia

yeah… I guess what is the point of running away…. either way the church will still be a threat away… that you’ll have face anytime.

  • FTxCerber

I dearly hope Tilly isnt the typr that would use any methods and means to reach her goal. I could think of some ways to make the witches leave Border Town and they are all ugly and infact quite simple to execute…

Btw, Roland should hurry up and get a working flexible gun for Nightingale… I feel like she is one of the candidates that is most likely to die, to make Roland work even harder and make more effective decesive decisions…

  • phyrigia

i thought it would be anna… but nightingale showed up instead. hahaha

    • Kuq Ku

I never would have thought that Anna would do something like that, shes not the sort to react that way, shes got a poker face most of the time.

Anna is the sort that wont give a warning, she would simply take you out without a thought, like she did during the MoD

She was ready to make Juilienned slices of Ashes if she made one wrong move towards Roland.

Nightingale my fave babe, so passionate and endearing, I love her to bits, this is exactly something she would do for her man!

  • Jason

Its hard to think of fast firing guns that don’t use springs. Except for the revolver.

    • DudeForDuke

Springs aren’t a problem. After all, the flintlock mechanisms that Roland is already using en masse on his rifles have spring mechanisms. Revolvers also use plenty of springs (hammer, trigger, ect.).

But without cartridges and primers for ammo, he’s going to be stuck in the early 1800s as far as firearm development goes. He needs cartridges and primers/percussion caps. Even with only black powder still, he can do a lot more with self-contained cartridges with primers. Later on even more advanced (like gas-operated) will require smokeless powder.

      • Proxy Account

Reminds me of the head Alchemist in Redwater. He should be having serious goosebumps right about now.

  • FanChan

haha Mc will be making atom bombs in no time

  • Chiki Amara

Why not use a tiny pieces of flint to make spark?

And.. oh.. i have bad feeling.. acctualy tily was on church side.. which when the curch go on war will not get interferen by the witch.. thats why the witch all been transmigrated to the fjord.. and they have nowhere to run if the church hunting them later after the war.. but i hope tily not that kind person.. or maybe after a brainwash..

    • DudeForDuke

There were a few designs that tried repeating shots without primers. None of them worked well enough to disregard development and use of the primer/percussion cap, however.

Elisha Collier revolver design was actually a quite successful version (about 10,000 were used, many by the British) of them and it primed the gun with powder when the hammer was cocked.

Another was the Kalthoff repeating rifle, which was rare and incredibly expensive and complicated.

Then there was also the Cookson repeater.

There was also stranger things like the Belton (later Jennings) flintlocks which used barrels with multiple segmented loads (think of the “Metal Storm” concept of today).

      • Chiki Amara

I see.. so gun is actually abit complicated.. i tho roland just need how to triger spark inside that bullet..

    • Royaldarkness

about the tily part that on church side,oh you are so wrong in many time here =.= (the reason ?,just go read the raw if you want to confrim)

      • Chiki Amara

Haha dont be so mad.. its just my opini if there was an twisted plot.. hehe

  • Sharpine Wardana

Let’s wait until he make an assault rifle and sniper rifle, without a doubt he will be very OP.
And, if he make a nuke or some huge power explosive, use ligtning to drop it on the main church won’t all the problem cease to exist?

    • the evil one

that to op if he make nuke or high power bomb

just making a rifle with fast reload is ok

      like springfield or bar

    • FTxCerber

But how does a bomb work? How do we effectively use blackpowdergunpowder? How do we make rhe explosion lethal enough? How do we add shrapnails, without making a potential danger from metal sparns?

      • João Paulo Francisconi

Bombs are quite easy to make, actually. It’s the same principle by wich a gun works except guns are more complicated because you’ve to control the explosion instead of just let it reckt everything. BTW, if you put too much gunpowder or the gun is damaged the pressure on the gun can make it burst and act like a mini-bomb. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Oh1lyMyejpI

    • DudeForDuke

Making a nuke is beyond his capabilities. It’s beyond the capabilities of many COUNTRIES. Namely due to the fact that naturally occurring uranium is U-238, which is a poor candidate for nuclear fission (it’s capable of it, but it’s not self-sustaining). That’s why it’s enriched (often through centrifuges) to separate out U-235 from the uranium – which is suitable for fission bombs. To make matters worse, about 85% of your uranium needs to be U-235 (of which, in naturally occurring uranium, makes up less than 1% of the total uranium by volume – it’s very rare) in order to produce reliable fission reactions that don’t produce fizzles (like North Korea’s multiple bomb tests).

Theoretically, Roland could make a dirty bomb. If he found naturally occurring uranium and knew what it was, he could make yellowcake out of it via alkali leaching. Then again, a dirty bomb wouldn’t be particularly useful except a handful of targets. Not to mention it’s rather indiscriminate and the effects aren’t quick enough to be used as a tactical weapon.

      • M32

Yellowcake is relatively harmless. You might develop cancer years later, though.

Dirty bombs can only be made with nuclear waste.

        • DudeForDuke

          “Yellowcake is relatively harmless.”

…”Relatively” when talking about radiological hazards in comparison to, say, Polonium-210 or Cobalt-60 is a bit misleading. Is it less dangerous? Yes. Is it still dangerous, especially considering long-term effects? Also yes.

Part of that is due to yellowcake still has plenty of alpha emitters, which if they happen to get into the body are potentially incredibly dangerous despite them having little to no effect touching them (alpha decay can’t really penetrate well past skin and whatnot). When ingested or, and this is important, especially if inhaled it’s radiological hazard becomes hundreds of times more dangerous to healthy cells.

“You might develop cancer years later, though.”

That’s the point of a dirty bomb. It’s probably the perfect terrorist weapon because of the unknowns and “what-ifs” and because it would present a major clean-up and radiological hazard for years to come. Even if no one died from the initial dirty bomb, it would still be extremely dangerous and effective (in a modern society).

In Roland’s case, however, it wouldn’t be an effective weapon. Society isn’t advanced enough for a dirty bomb to be a significant hazard.

“Dirty bombs can only be made with nuclear waste.”

Completely false. Plutonium-238 is perfectly usable (and a major concern) for dirty bomb use. As is Cobalt-60 (which is some seriously hazardous shit), in fact, especially. Some of the isotopes of cobalt have been theorized as being one of the best suited candidates for dirty bombs in the vein of cobalt or “salted” bombs (using “dirty bomb” to describe this is almost insulting – these are true, engineered and designed radiological dispersal devices). Moreover, none of these are nuclear waste materials.

  • SeraphiMaelstrom

Judgement army soldiers can still fight even with a severed limb. I think guns wont be enough but cannons to smash them to pieces.

    • Michael Renner

just turn them into monty python black knight. they will try to keep fighting with no limbs at all.

      • Raufgar

        “Tis’ only a flesh wound”

    • shade 0180

That’s why headshots exist specially if they are doing it in a rather good distance which is pretty much an option specially in the case of opponent that can’t feel what happened to them. This is an era of swords and bow. the kind of distance that gun holder has over them is so far that even if they have this mental conditioning of that level it won’t help them close that distance.

      • DudeForDuke

Plus, Roland is getting a shitload of livestock… Most of it is for farming/food, but if he got a couple dozen horses… Say hello to the world’s first Dragoons, firearm equipped cavalry units. They’d be damn near unstoppable when trained/drilled well (and given how dedicated and serious the Border Town militia is, the enemy should be DAMNED AFRAID if this ever comes to pass). Maneuver warfare combined with the firearm takes the drawbacks of melee engagement and rate of fire off the table.

And, oh look, Roland is making a revolver firearm that could easily be used as a pistol or rifle…

        • Chiki Amara

Yes.. uh.. uhmm whats its named in medieval names..? Uh… ” Thunder stick/wand ”

          For the riffle “thunder staff”

          Hehehe

          • Raufgar

Oh, come on. There can be only one name : THIS IS MY BOOMSTICK!

            • Chiki Amara

              Not bad also.. 😀
But its must sounded like “boooommm” not a “bang..!”.. or can we spare name bangstick? Lol

    • Herloct

Well, if you could bombard them from a far…

    • Maxi King

“and if that doesn’t work stab them in the face”

      • Raufgar

Remember to use the pointy end.

    • DennMael

Mortar Shells? That was what came to mind for me when I thought of the church’s super soldiers. High-angle artillery with explosive ordinance in them.

    • DudeForDuke

Blood loss and internal organ destruction, dude. Even the demon mutation animals suffer from blood loss. And we’re talking about large projectiles, here. I don’t recall Roland mentioning the caliber of his rifles, but in human history you’d be hard pressed to find muzzleloaders with a caliber less than .45. Seeing up to .75 caliber was pretty common (some went even bigger than that, but they weren’t standard).

Where as modern bullets can benefit from ridiculous speeds and bullet design/composition which will do havoc upon internal organs, firing projectiles almost up to an inch in size is going to cause tremendous damage to internal organs and cause huge entrance wounds (lead balls tended to often become lodged in the body after veering off in various angles – that’s why so many developed gangrene). Minie balls tended to penetrate through the body and leave exit wounds, however. But with holes that size in you, causing that much disruption to your body and organs, you could easily bleed out to unconsciousness in no time. Even supersoldiers need to breath, need to circulate blood and need their internal organs. Without them, they can’t sustain their biological functions – they die.

The only problem is the lack of rate of fire, and Roland is working on solving that problem.

    • Neruz

Actually the solution to the army of judges is machine guns, Roland needs the alchemists to come through for him on smokeless powder. It doesn’t matter how crazed and immune to pain the soldiers are; if they try charging across barbed wire towards entrenched MG nests they will all die before they get there, and even if they don’t they won’t have the forces left to hold the area against a counterattack.

The pills counter single-shot musket lines as their primary effectiveness is in the morale shock, but automatic firearms project enough lead that they just don’t care whether their target can feel pain and fear or not.

      • DudeForDuke

He doesn’t even need smokeless powder. He needs cartridges and primers. Hiram Maxim used black powder cartridges on his prototypes of the Maxim machine gun (commercially available smokeless powder wasn’t available yet). Because it’s recoil operated, it can work (fouling would also be an issue and it would have to be cleaned and serviced more than a Maxim using smokeless powder – but it would work). Also, you might want to call Wendy along to blow away smoke and breeze in clean air. Firing that thing would produce… a shitload of smoke.

Gas-operated firearms are kinda a no-go with black powder. They wouldn’t function reliably.

      • shade 0180

He doesn’t even need the barbed wire. he can just set up a muddy floor about even just a foot deep and 2 MG postioned in a crisscross position can practically clear them while traversing that shit considering their speed to charge with a horse or not will be slowed down significantly.

    • João Paulo Francisconi

They still have humans bodies, so hits to vital organs like brain, heart and main arteries will kill then immediatly or within seconds from extreme loss of blood. Also, gunshots are way more deadly than a cut from a sword because even small callibers when entering a body will cause a micro-explosion from expanding gases that will reckt all organs in the vicinity and shot down your body even if you’re some kind of superhuman like the God’s Punishement Army.

  • DudeForDuke

“The problem was that there doesn’t exist a reliable primer, which could light the cartridge filled with black powder.”

Very difficult (nearly impossible) to do advanced firearms designs without primers. Even percussion caps are immensely useful compared to muzzleloading and/or loose powder loading. Self-contained cartridges are what truly made advances possible, even more so than smokeless powder.

That said, there’s a few ways around it. None of them particularly good, but they work.
First is the method that Elisha Collier used in his flintlock revolver. It used a self priming function which deposited gunpowder when the hammer on the revolver was cocked:

You could even go one step further and have it so the cylinder could be replaced with another that is already loaded. Sorta like a moon-clip is used today, but replacing the entire cylinder (some real world revolvers, like the 1858 Remington New Army, had this as an option for faster reloads).

There was also the loaded breech block that wall guns utilized. Similar concept except instead of a cylinder it’s a block where you’d load the charge and bullet. Possible to design it so that it’s already primed when loaded and all that needs to be done is insert the breech block into the gun and let the flint ignite it when you fire it.
