Chapter 136 The Dilemma

The last two weeks in Clearwater Port seemed to be one day of festival after another, even standing above the ground, on the balcony of the Lord’s Tower, Ryan could still feel the exuberant atmosphere within the city.

The people and materials they had moved from Eagle City had greatly expanded the strength of the harbor city, the looters had really a fruitful harvest and the slavers haven’t been any less successful. After this series of fighting, the Black Sail Fleet not only did not have many losses, they could even increase the ranks of the sailors with new slaves who were currently standing at the edge of the harbor undergoing a rigid drill. In a few days, they would set sails towards the Islands of the Fjords beginning this year’s first looting operation.

Her Majesty the Queen has also openly declared the Slave Act, as long as these captured slaves from Eagle City were able to capture new slaves, they could exchange them for their replacement. Like this, they could jump from the rank of a slave to a full citizen of the Clearwater Port. With such a decree of encouragement, they could guarantee that the former residents of Eagle City, who had now become slaves, would do their best to fight for her Majesty.

Today, the defeated Timothy should have returned to King’s City and shouldn’t have any possibility to block the conquest of the Queen of Clearwater. As long as time passes, Garcia Wimbledon was bound to become the Queen of Graycastle. Thinking of this, Ryan couldn’t understand why he didn’t see even a small trace of happiness on the Queen’s face, but to the contrary, her eyebrows were always forming a frown.

“Your Majesty, the Clan Heads of the Sandstone Clan and Black Bone Clan have come to see you.” At this moment, the voice of a guard could be heard through the door.

Ryan looked at Her Majesty, only to see that the latter didn’t show any sign of listening, so he could only shout, “Bring them in.”

His Majesty, whether it was to rest, to convene a meeting or just to meet with people, she was always at the top of the tower. As long as the weather was good, the terrace was the place where Garcia’s could be found. Most people weren’t conformable with standing in mid-air, facing the slightly fishy smelling sea breeze. And the people from the Extreme South were no exception to this.

The Clan Head of the Sandstone Clan was a petite woman, but she also acted as the clan’s own goddess. When Ryan had heard of this for the first time, he had scoffed within his heart, what Goddess? She is nothing more than a corrupted witch. The Clan Head of the Black Bone Clan was a tall man, whose face was covered in scars and whose arms and legs were exceptional muscular. Each meeting, they had to place three to four guards to surround him, in case he planned to act against Her Majesty the Queen.

The moment they set foot on the terrace, the two Clan Heads invariably raised their eyebrows, but they soon changed their expressions back, and instead they went down on one knee to pay their respect to Her Majesty. “May there always be an oasis in front of you, and may the stars of heaven always light your path.”

“Stand up,” Garcia said while she herself sat down on the parapet. “How is it, are you satisfied with your new home?”

“Everything is fine,” answered Goddess Kaaba rushed. “Here the land has water and forests, which is much more comfortable than the life in Sand City, where the wind blows the sand all over the place.”

“When everything is to your liking, then why did you come to me?”

“Your Majesty, you have to”

The moment the Black Bone Clan Head opened his mouth to speak he got already interrupted by Kaaba, “Yes, your Majesty. After the last battle, many of our warriors became weak and dispirited, only after a new dose of pills did their symptoms get any better, but we don’t have enough pills in our hands. So, we would like to ask you if you could give us more pills.”

“I meant to say the same thing” muffled the Black Bone Clan Head after he received a glare from Kaaba.

“These pills are very complicated to produce and have rare ingredients, I do not have much surplus. But rest assured, when the new batch of pills is produced, I will give them to you as soon as possible. But don’t forget to prepare the gold royals, if they aren’t enough, you’ll have to pay in other ways.”

“Your majesty, I beg your pardon for my asking,” Kaaba hesitated for a moment. “I wonder when the next batch will be made.”

“I’m unable to give you this information,” Garcia stroke through her hair, sorting the chaos created by the sea breeze, “All the news about the pills are top secret, you can only go back and wait patiently. Those soldiers are just dispirited, just let them rest a little bit more, then everything will be alright.”

After receiving a hint from Garcia, her guards walked forward to surround the Clan Heads and lead both of them back down, without giving them any chance to say a few anymore words.

When the door closed behind them, Garcia sighed softly.

Ryan who had rarely heard such a tone from the Queen had to ask: “Your Majesty, don’t you think that it was wrong to let the Sandpeople settle down at our southern border? One day, when they become stronger…”

“No, Ryan,” Garcia shook her head, “I have never been worried about the Sandpeople, they won’t ever be a threat to Clearwater Port. The lake in their territory is exactly in the middle between the two clans, but the river ending in the lake goes first through the Port of Clear Water. So as long as I block up the river, the amount of water in the lake will be reduced and they will start to fight against each other. This is also exactly the reason, why I chose the Sandstone Clan and the Black Bone Clan, their relationship was never harmonious. “

“Then are you worried about the matter of the pills?”

Garcia didn’t give him a reply, however, just at this moment a guard knocked once more on the door and announced, “Your Majesty, the priest of the church, Dicar.”

“Bring him in,” the Queen stood up and her face became darker.

“Your Majesty, Garcia Wimbledon, I greet you on behalf of the Holy City,” the priest entered the terrace while bowing.

“Pills? Why is it that the previous batches of pills that had always been served timely, but this batch got so much delayed?” Garcia asked coldly.

“Your Majesty no need for anger, this is exactly the reason I came,” Dicar had to wipe the sweat from his forehead, “You asked to buy 5000 pills, but that is just too much, even if we take all the pills produced for the Hermes we can’t fulfill your request. This time I brought as much as I could with me.”

“How much?” Interrupted Garcia.

“One thousand.” Said Dicar in a consoling voice, “the rest will be sent after a while.”

“And it will still be the same as previously promised?” Garcia’s facial expression got a bit nicer, “You now I want to have as many as I can. Also where have you stored the pills? I’ll immediately send someone to fetch them.”

“In the church, the gold royals…”

“This time, I won’t reduce the number of gold royals,” Garcia stepped directly in front of Dicar and whispered into his ear, “but if the delivering of the pills get further delayed, your head will hang on the highest mast of my flagship, and I can guarantee you, the archbishop won’t shed a single tear for you.”

Hearing this the priest turn pale and directly asked to be excused.

When he had left, Garcia went back to the railing and looked out over the sea. Her hair was lifted up by the sea breeze, just like the flags of her ships, waving in the wind.

“You were right, I’m worried about the pills.” Garcia’s voice seemed distant. “If Timothy had waited two months longer, my preparation would have been more adequate, but he had moved too fast.”

“You’ve done a great job,” Ryan thought to himself, who could have done a better job? The moment she had occupied Eagle City, she had already started to prepare the path for her retreat. She had ordered her soldiers to take away all of the usable materials and residents, while at the same time she let ditches be dug out everywhere in the city, afterward filling them up with black water. Since they had a shortage of manpower, Garcia exchanged the territory between the Southern Border and the Wildland for the support of the Sandpeople. She then gave the Clan warriors some pills and let them attack Timothy’s knights from both sides, however, to ensure that her loyal supporters were able to resist the last overwhelming charge, they didn’t hesitate for a moment to swallow the secret drugs themselves.

“The secret medicine provided by the church wasn’t like what they had told, allowing alive without any obstructions. After swallowing them once, if they didn’t get the next dose fast enough, the medication will turn into poison, letting them become weak and later die in pain because of muscle atrophy. If it were only the Sandpeople I wouldn’t care, but the people who worked for me deserve something better. “She paused,” Ryan, take some men to receive the pills and distribute them under our heroic warriors. But only use half of them, this way we can last a little longer.”

“Just as you wish, Your majesty.”

As Ryan was already halfway to the door, they could hear the guards voice for the third time through the door, “Your Majesty, we have just received a secret letter from King’s City.”

“Wait a moment, let’s read the letter first and then you can go,” Garcia ordered.

“Yes, Your Majesty,” Ryan received the letter from the guard, broke the seal, and removed the parchment. Most of these letters contained information sent by the spies hidden in all parts of the country. They were never signed, never had a recipient written on it and its content was also always as concise and clear as possible normally. But when he saw the first sentence, his whole body was suddenly rooted.

“On the twenty-second day of spring, the church seized the capital of the Kingdom of the Eternal Winter, declaring that the kingdom is now under their rule.”

Thanks for the chapter Roxerer, Jatz, and Carsten T.! Should be obvious what the Church is doing now if it wasn’t before.

  • Gege

ouch, All the comment here combined felt longer to read than the chapter. Lol

  • Kuq Ku

1 The church appearing out of coincidence just before the attack by Timothy? That would send “Danger” Signals like crazy through my brain.

Heres why I think that did not happen, She had commissioned the Oil be spread through out that area, this takes man power and time. Organizing the Sandpeople to work in concert with her people for this attack also takes time, how does she know that they wouldnt turn on her when her forces are low and not just take what she offered but everything else as well? She invested rather heavily on her own resources that were being easily mowed down by Timothys army. The Church if they were so conveniently to appear when she was in the process of doing this. I would smell something incredibly rotten.

Thoughts of “How damn long have these bastards been watching my progress? are they feeding this information to Timothy, are they playing me off against Timothy who could also have access to these drugs, then decide who best to support depending on the outcome? there are a million other stray thoughts of paranoia that Id be thinking of from this one act alone.

It takes time to do anything time to plan, to organize and trust that this outcome will be fruitful, she doesnt appear to be using witches, at least this hasnt been revealed as yet, the Sandpeople have witches, but that isnt the same as her using them like Roland has. So how was she able to secure their support? how long had she been dealing with them to know so much about oil and what they would be willing to do to craft this alliance? How much time was needed to produce this outcome?

If the church were watching her progress how much did they manipulate for this outcome? The convenience of supply and demand for their product was a “Danger” signal that she should have solved first.

    2. Making this amount of drugs to supply unless they have massive stock in storage would be an incredible “Danger” signal that would be screaming at me do not take do not take, Why have they stockpiled so much of this product? what purpose does a Church have to stockpile this much for use by my army? simple answer is the demonic beast and their fight with the devil.

Which would have me thinking, but what would they use? have they got vast amounts of these to give me freely? shouldnt they be used for the demonic threat? how were they made? why have they not given My Fathers military these drugs, why have I never heard of them til now, why would they share this information with me? why are they giving me something on the surface that is very powerful? my brain would be working overtime, simple answer, they have decided to support me, because I am the stronger candidate to the throne, ignoring the fact she is a woman, and that Timothy was always the heir to the throne prior to this weird decree by the King her Father. I really wish they had shown their interaction with Garcia and the Church from the beginning, to much to speculate about.

They keep saying she is a prodigy, how is she considered that? by there standards as Ive said before she could be outstanding, but compared to us not so much. I hate when they write characters with this Top Tier ability yet shows no reason why this is so, the convenient “Genius” tag assumes great things. Sorry stray ramble.

    3. Testing the product, why would she use her own men as guinea pigs? she has serfs or prisoners for that purpose much like Roland, why dirty your own tools when you can use someone else, I really wish there was a time frame on when she used the drug and when she got it because wouldnt she need to convince the Sandpeople to take an unknown drug as well? this is important to determine when the Church started to dig its claws in and in how stupid Garcia was to take it, hopefully they will have this clarified in some way.

    4. Giving this drug to the Sandpeople, if this drug was as powerful as the church said, then why would you give it to the Sandpeople? theyre notorious for fighting and you want to give them a powerful fighting drug to do what? fight for you in the hopes they dont turn on you instead? aside from this, she was willing to give her own people this drug and leave them in the city to be cannon fodder then worry after the fact that the ill effects of the drug cant be countered with more of the same drugs, never mind the fact she left them to fry and fight against Timothys elite soldiers lol.

Meh there are to many plot holes that arent being filled, I hope this is clarified later at least from a PoV of the sandpeople and so forth thats if there are any sandpeople left at the end of this, so why did Roland think she was a genius? I really want to know so far shes proven shes anything but.

  • timbone

Well unlike Roland she doesn’t have all the plot armor lol.
Roland happened to get Nightingale who can read things and also Wendy an insider from the church. Personally she is quite competent for a canon fodder character. She is very thorough so much so that she killed Roland who is not supposed to be a threat.

  • timbone

Actually she is using the church to control the tribes

    • Kuq Ku

I want to know more about the tribes, they seem interesting, they have witches in high positions, makes me wonder how the Church hasnt eradicated them yet

  • mllhild

“former residents of Eagle City, who had now become slaves” Did she really enslave the population of one of her own cities?
And look, now we know why Timothys knights failed so badly.
Also the church moved faster than I expected. I thought they would wait a bit more to attack the first kingdom.

  • Empty

So Garcia is weak as she went for pills.

    • someone who isnt an idiot

She has always been an asshat
She just enslaved the population of one of her own cities and dont forget she poisoned the original Roland even when he posed 0 threat to anyone

  • Zeth

    Thank you!!!

  • kirindas

    Thanks for the new chapter!

  • NaoSou

    Thanks!

  • MangoGuy

Holy feck!!! The Lord is everywhere!

  • Nameless Marauder

Look like the church is really playing for keeps, soon all other territories will fall in their hands, but do not worry a hero soon will appear, look on the sky It’s A Bird?… It’s Superman? No Its Roland been in a princess carried by Lightning, coming to save the day!

    • shadowtrap2010

why would he do that … just throw a few napalm at them and they would cry till kingdom come!
biological weapon is very powerful you know…well they been outlaw by the world because of the extreme casualty it could cause… but he in another world so throw a few toxic cloud to his foes should be justified!!!
or aiming a few rail gun at the church..

I had the feeling all these drug wars was inspirated by the Chinese opium wars.

  • Nantoka

    Thanks for the chapter :3

  • icicle

    thanks for the chapter
Really shocked that Garcia wwnt for the pills. With how diabolical and smart she has been portrayed as being, it is surprising that she could walk into the church’s trap like that

    • ofcoursenot

Well she doesn’t have guns Nor magic, hard pressed to find anymore options to boost combat strength

      • icicle

there is boosting combat strength and walking into a bear trap that will slowly bleed you out

        • ofcoursenot

yup and she choose to survive first and deal with problems later

  • MOHLT

Large part of princess army is not even loyal to her and some of the more loyal subjects now are drug addicts. Church fucked her up pretty good… and now she knows why.

  • agila0212

Thank you for the chapter 🙂

  • Oak

    Thanks for the chapter

  • Artem Chashinov

Too fast, church is too fast, plot is too fast, too many points Roland need to look into, i hope author not digging a grave here for himself.

  • Shinn154

    thanks for the chapter

  • Drifter

This chapter was not gentle with García. Noticed that so far there’s not feedback from her subjects other than from Ryan, who idolize his queen.

Wonder if all those silences and poses from Garcia aren’t just an act to hide her real imcopetent self (like some autodestructive lich in another famous light novel). Is the imouto the one behind the scenes?

    • timbone

Giver her some credit. It has been made pretty clear that she is not incompetent right from chapter one

  • Angel

wow the Church already lauch their attack 😀 , now it become more interesting ahahaha 😀 i am curiosu what will happen!

    thx for the chapter ^^

  • phyrigia

bad druggers…. i see now… it makes you need to use and use the pills again… I think roland get to see the side-effect muscle athrophy, right? wait.. does that mean Garcia didnt test the pills from the church? or she’s forced to use the pills because of Timothy faster attack?
I think roland should have tried the pills to a chicken / a horse to better see the effect…? rather than human… and make the horse pull a heavy weight to see how the strength and fastness increases fold ….
so the church is in the way of collecting money via pills, huh? what a smart move…

    • ylchow

well, considering Roland only had 1 dose of the pills, I understand why he went for broke. Remember that humans and animals have different weights and therefore the dosage needs to be adjusted, the chicken might have just died straight away while the horse may not have any visible effects

  • Kuq Ku

I thought Garcia was smart, she doesnt seem very smart to me, imagine trusting what the church said and using those pills on her own men without proper testing.

Perhaps shes smart by their standards, since it seems theyre all rather stupid, then could it be that shes pretty average if that? I was very surprised she would use those pills, even though she had some misgivings, and Timothy forced her hand, but from the looks of things she was already prepared for something along the lines of invasion regardless, makes no sense that she would fall for the drug trap.

I thought she was forward thinking, I hope Im wrong, but it seems she fked up.

    • phyrigia

I’d think she’s forced to use the pills from the church because of Timothy attack… so her preparation for battle isnt adequate..?

      • Kuq Ku

That would be valid if we werent already aware of her planning something long before the King announced that challenge to his offspring, she was already moving to do something, what that was is not entirely clear.

She was prepared in advanced, had already moved her pieces in position before Timothy could act, and she is also aware of her status, she knows that in terms of smarts and ability she is above her other siblings, well till Roland of course.

I dont really get why she did what she did, She seems to be overlooking a great many things, there are so many signs of outside manipulation that I cant believe if shes suppose to be a prodigy, isnt aware of it. But I guess the saying “Cant see the forest for the trees” can affect geniuses

In my mind the previous Rolands wasnt that much of a fool in the end, he preferred to enjoy life rather than wallow in the malicious underhanded world of claiming the throne, Im sure he was allergic to the politics

        • phyrigia

The opponent was timothy with elite knights. while Garcia armies were below in skill (pirates and tribes). Mostly stayed in ship and the ship cannot contain so many people. unless she have guns like roland armies then she would be likely defeated in battle.
It was already explained: “Since they had a shortage of manpower, Garcia exchanged the territory between the Southern Border and the Wildland for the support of the Sandpeople. She then gave the Clan warriors some pills and let them attack Timothy’s knights from both sides, however, to ensure that her loyal supporters were able to resist the last overwhelming charge, they didn’t hesitate for a moment to swallow the secret drugs themselves.”

          • Kuq Ku

I understand pressure to use it, but, I cant believe that Garcia would trust the church, nor would I believe she would use it so recklessly at least The Garcia I had in my mind wouldn’t have done that.

Its unclear that she was aware of the effects beforehand, but what I dont understand is why she let her strong support go in like cannon fodder and leave the Sand people as her clean up crew, I dont get it.

Timothy thought he had it in the bag til they came out of nowhere, so why put them at more risk then worry about them afterwards?

I also dont understand how she was able to secure a large supply of drugs before Timothy came, it sounds like she had used them a fair bit, so then that could possibly mean that this wasnt the first time using those drugs, or that shes needed to use ti often since using it to defeat Timothy.

Im hoping by her mood that shes planning some nasty payback to those drug suppliers and the church

            .

            • phyrigia

I think it might be the first time… “The secret medicine provided by the church wasn’t like what they had told, allowing alive without any obstructions. After swallowing them once, if they didn’t get the next dose fast enough, the medication will turn into poison, letting them become weak and later die in pain because of muscle atrophy.”
And it might also the church trick on Garcia… you know the first batch of pills was easy to get but the second time they make it look difficult to produce..

  • mllhild

    (during teaser)
Garcias long term strategy looks a bit odd if she wants the whole country
    gather a pirate fleet
    expand it and gather resources
    maybe attack Kingcity?

In fact she has to stop as fast as possible to attack the neighboring countries cities and boats or marine trade will perish and the other kingdoms will support the second prince then.
She has to transform part of her fleet into traders and then become a marine power and so important for the neighboring kingdoms that they decide to forget the aggressions during the pirate time or it looks bleak for her. After all its not possible to maintain such an extensive navy AND a large army.
She got the 2th Prince beaten once because he was careless and overconfident. Future wars won’t go as well or easy, nor can she just sail up a river since her boats would be sitting duck to enemy fire.

    • timbone

Last I checked she controls the ports. And unlike on land, you can’t sneak attack on the sea. That’s why submarines were so overpowered when they were invented

Little Town! The most magnificent battleship, it is your time to shine! Blow evil pirates away!

  • Weedisdaboss

Damn they sound like nice People /s 😉

    • Wrandral

So Garcia is going the Pirate Queen route, well she won’t get many friends this way which may help Timothy to find allies against her

      • Arashi Darkness

well, the way she is going to follow will not get much friend (of course she will find ally, but not roland) but it will sure dealing with timothy and the church more and that will help roland have more time to develop (and deal damage to the church force ,too) if I am correctly

      • Donald Hilton

She has goods and new technologies from foreign lands and so far she is not a great menace for nobles, since she focus on the sea. Reasons strong enough to allow her buy some allies.

        • Neruz

Yeah Garcia will definitely be the biggest non-Church obstacle for Roland. The fact that he is rocking concrete ships with cannons that will likely evolve into Ironclads before he fights her will strongly skew the odds in his favor though, unless she gets help from the Church.

          • mllhild

With Roland rejecting the Church and Garcia getting stronger, I think the Church will fuel Timothy’s power since in their view Garcia would stabilize the country to fast if they aided her.

            • timbone

Yeah most people seem to be ignoring how powerful she currently is. Being able to get entire clans to join her army, And pillaging coastal cities is a lot more profitable than many think since in the medieval era most trade was done via sea routes so coastal cities are stinking rich.

The church probably didn’t expect such an overwhelming victory from her and decided to use Roland to check her power.

Having her defend from both sides would weaken her faster.

              • I am not a spoiler I swear

But then Roland decided to fuck up the Church’s plan and turtled up in his area to improve his army and economy.

              • Gaspard Ruse Ald

Yep, the viking fund their invasion to England by raiding and pillaging.

              • Kuq Ku

I dont think shes powerful, its rather precarious but not as bad as Timothy right now, but while he is licking his wounds they will heal, and considering his current position he has more at his disposal, if the Church decides to mess with him by offering poisoned fruit.

I doubt shes worried so much about others as she is in Timothy and now the Church, Im sure she is considering her current situation, and knows that they have weakened her considerably, the money she has now is funding drugs, I wouldve taken the loss to Timothy and simply run rather than be in the situation she is now.

                • timbone

The translator pointed out that she did take a loss. A calculated risk. Like I said her character is being underestimated, instead of ignoring Roland, she killed him. She is very thorough.

                  • Kuq Ku

She did kill Roland this is true, which is why she should be wondering how the hell did Roland survive.

She has a weakened army, theyre basically damaged goods that will only be useful as expensively maintained cannon fodder.

She now has to recruit more from who knows where, and then fund them by more raiding and pillaging, this rapid expanse will come at more of a cost than she can maintain, we have very little information on the Siblings to assess, if they would reveal more that would be great, perhaps a side story will give us more insight.

She is in the Churches grasp, and she knows it, either she cuts her losses now or try fix it. Shes bought herself some time with that win against Timothy, but for how much longer? if the Church decides to let her go and wipe out her army by not supplying more drugs, and going to Timothy instead, what would she do? how will she counter it?

                    • timbone

From what I read, she gave a bulk of the pills to the tribes not her army so her army is not finished like you say

            • Kuq Ku

She hasnt gotten stronger, but weaker, if realization hasnt kicked in that shes now a pawn of the Church, otherwise the army she had invested in is screwed. Theyre already playing the “We havent got enough in stock” BS.

I think shes going the pirate route to protect her true intentions.
