Chapter 112 Battle of Eagle City (Part 3)

It seemed as if the King’s knights were holding a sharp silver blade when they cut into the rear of Garcia’s retreating troops.

The crowd broke into chaos and a lot of people fell to the ground while they were trying to flee, only to end up getting trampled to death by the horses.

Occasionally some of them pulled out weapons and tried to resist the attackers, but against the superior knights they were soon cut into pieces. Leading this kind of unstoppable flood was an elite knight from the camp in the Cold Wind Ridge. It was Knight Naimen who served as the spear point for this attack. Furthermore, his blue cloak which danced in the wind behind him was particularly eye-catching, wherever he went, the enemy would try to flee. Every time after his sword cut down, it would be covered in blood.

Timothy Wimbledon instead stood in the distance on a small hill, overlooking the whole battlefield. At this point, the three thousand people of Garcia’s troops were no longer able to hold together their formation, instead with every second they were falling further and further apart, which brought them to almost completely halting their march.

They won’t last much longer, Timothy thought, the moment when the second of my three teams attacks they will collapse. These people simply cannot resist the assault of Graycastle’s elite knights. Most of them aren’t even wearing any armor, the moment a sharp blade comes close to them, they immediately start losing their will to fight.

Everything happened almost exactly as he had expected, after spending one hour to bypass Eagle City, they had turned over and rode through a sparse forest, finally reaching the road. Back on the road, Timothy ordered his knights to start rushing, and finally, one hour later they were able to catch up with Garcia.

According to the advice of Duke Frances, Timothy divided his troop into three teams of around three hundred knights, and let them take turns in attacking the different sides of the enemy. Like this, he was able to hold some troops back and was always ready to send in reinforcements when it was needed. In order to avoid the possibility that they might get surrounded, his knights were not allowed to attack the center of the enemy’s formation and instead they should attack its flanks. With short speedy dashes, they only cut off the leftovers, with each charge killing only dozens of people.

This tactic was obviously very successful, after a few runs the enemy already had more than a hundred casualties, while still being unable to even retaliate. They even tried to organize a counterattack with their own cavalry, but the gap between their equipment and training was just too far off. Compared to the Knights of the King, the momentary patchwork of cavalry was nothing more than a group of horseback-riding infantry. The moment when they came face to face, those “cavalry” made of the men that had been brave enough to charge into battle were simply killed, or if they were lucky they were able to scatter in all directions.

This unilateral massacre was a great blow to the enemy’s morale, and soon Timothy noticed some of Garcia’s troops begun to break away from the formation and flee in all directions.

The time has finally come for us to launch our main offensive, he thought. When the Cold Wind Knight came back from leading his attack, Timothy didn’t order him to start the next round of shock tactics, instead, he signaled him to come over to his side.

“Your Majesty, their formation will soon come falling apart,” Naimen wiped the sweat from his forehead away, whilst leaving some bloody marks on his face as he did – naturally it was the blood of his enemies, until now he hadn’t received any injuries during the whole battle.

Seeing this, Timothy took his own handkerchief and handed it to him. “Well done, you can take a break now, it’s finally time to deliver the deathblow.”

Seeing that the next round of shook attack wasn’t coming in, Garcia’s troops also realized that the decisive moment was coming. Her large group completely stopped their forward march, instead, they unhurriedly gathered, until they had formed a tight formation. Every outermost soldier was holding a wooden pike, and held it up, waiting for the impact.

Discovering this, Timothy only scoffed, in his eyes, it was nothing more than an already dying man’s last struggle. Without barricades, without armor, only with flesh and blood alone you want to resist the mighty impact of my knights? This can only end in disaster for you. No matter which cards you have left my dear younger sister, you won’t be able to change the outcome. Naturally, it could also be true that you have already departed long ago, leaving this group to die and buying time for yourself to flee.

But he soon discovered he had been wrong.

Within the crowd, they once again put up the banner of the Queen of Clearwater. Seeing this green banner with the sailing boat and the crown fluttering in the wind, made Timothy frown. So he lifted his binocular and took a closer look at the enemy. He soon discovered standing behind the warriors who had raised the flag was the blurred figure of a woman who seemed to be shouting some orders. Even so, he couldn’t clearly see the other one’s face, yet her gray hair flowing in the wind gave her identity away.

Garcia Wimbledon, had not run.

Timothy took a deep breath, well, this only means that this farce will come to an end here. I don’t have to follow her to Clearwater Port.

After waiting for the horses to be fully rested, the new King gave the signal to start the main attack.

The cavalry formed from the knights and squires was around eight-hundred strong, and under the leadership of the King’s own knights, started the attack against the enemy. It was once more the Cold Wind Knight who was at the tip of the attack – Naimen Moor.

Just at the moment when the attack would finally hit, suddenly on both sides of the horizon, a huge numbers of troops appeared. After sending out strange war cries, they immediately began to rush into the direction of the battle.

Timothy couldn’t believe what his eyes were showing him.

Without raising any flags or wearing any emblems, the suddenly emerged troops didn’t resemble any known force of the kingdom. After a closer observation, Timothy saw that they were all wearing different armors and weapons. But with their high-stature and weird faces, Timothy knew, they could only be from one place.

The Sandpeople from the Extreme South!

He didn’t need to guess any longer if they were friend or foe, without a doubt, Garcia was able to make a deal with them. Leading this group of damn foreigners into the Kingdom of Graycastle. Only the thought of what this meant made Timothy burn with rage, he immediately shouted: “Give the signal, break off the attack!”

But it was already too late, such a high-speed assault was impossible to be broken up with such a short notice. His knights were directly impaling into the heart of Garcia’s troops, cutting through them like a hot knife through butter, with only one goal, reaching the Queen of Clearwater.

Timothy eagerly looked into the direction of the flying banner, hoping that it would break – the troops of the Sandpeople coming from both sides were each around one thousand men strong, making Garcia’s forces five thousand people strong. This was a size that Timothy was unable to face. Furthermore, the Sandpeople had a strong build and were always warring against each other which had turned them into a great threat even to his knights. Only by killing the enemy’s leader, cutting off their flagpole and breaking Garcia’s forces, would he have still a chance of winning.

However, even so, the flagpole swayed a bit but it was still standing straight.

Finally, the Sandpeople were able to close the circle, blocking the knight’s last way out and started joining the battle.

Without these reinforcements, Garcia’s three thousand desperados would have been defeated long ago. But at the moment, they were still persisting, and just like a swamp, swallowing one knight after another.

Hearing the horns blowing to retreat, the knights who were closer to the edge were trying to free themselves came rushing back to the King. But many of them had riden too deep into the enemy’s forces and were now trapped, including the Cold Wind Knight.

Currently, he was fighting against a nine feet tall warrior of the Sandpeople while breathing heavily. The other side was waving around a wooden stick as long as two men causing a small area to open up around their fight. Unfortunately, Naimen’s mount had already been crushed to death, and it was only thanks to his extraordinary reaction and agility that he was able to stay alive. But without a mount, his heavy armor lead to a rapid consumption of his physical strength. And when he once more stepped sideways trying to dodge, his foot slipped and he was hit by the stick in the middle of his chest. The strength of the attack that came hitting against his armor was so huge that it broke into two pieces.

His blue cloak swayed once more through the wind before he finally disappeared in the crowd.

Half an hour later, the knights who were still left fighting had become less and less and when the Sandpeople turned in the direction of Timothy’s hill, he grit his teeth and gave the order to withdraw. His entire group of people began their retreat northward. Compared with the huge force he had previously led into battle, the new King now merely had three hundred people still left around him.

  • Oak

    Thanks for the chapter

  • aadajo

I don’t really care for any of the other princes/princess as well as the church I normally skip them as a matter of course as they don’t have any major impact

    • Beauism

      true

    • Ruzi

They don’t have a short-term impact. What this battle means is that Timothy wasn’t able to defeat his sister, and lost a lot of manpower. Now he’ll have to keep himself busy with trying to take back territories that are under control of his sister, and completely disregard our MC – 4th prince, even if he defeats Duke Ryan. His sister also isn’t going to care about 4th prince.

      • Wrandral

Not so sure about Garcia not caring about Roland, remember that she’s the one that had him assassinated at the start which opened the way to our protagonist to possess the body. While Roland certainly won’t be her concern (at least up until his victory against Longsong Stronghold) she’s the kind of crazy prepared person to already have something in the works to get rid of him.

        • Kuq Ku

I really want to know their PoV on Roland. He lived like a fool for most of his life, barely bothering to do anything beyond seeking out pleasure and enjoyment for himself.

From our MCs own memories he realized that the Real Roland was a waste of a human, that although he wasnt that terrible, he wasnt that good either.

Timothy doesnt think anything of him, but what of his sisters. Having a male heir is problematic for the Sisters, unlike them they are limited to how many offspring they can have.

If these boys decided to secure their bloodline I wouldnt be very hard for them to do so. Having bastards as a potential threat could be a problem. I realize theyre not thinking of sowing wild oats. There is the issue of male dominance, not that Garcia seems to be having trouble being a leader. I really wouldnt mind a spin off series dedicated to them lol I find them really interesting.

With Roland who I love very much, he is thinking of building an ideal city trying to recreate what he had left in his previous life, however he is only one man, who so far hasnt delegated anything. He needs to recruit talented people to take the burden from him, its all well and good that he can create so much, but if something were to happen to him what then? could anyone there continue where he left off? would they even want to?

Right now he is indispensable, to the point that its detrimental, for now its ok, since hes starting out, his progress is crazy fast due to his use of Witches. His plans to teach others so they too can become thinkers like himself to help build the future alongside him, however these things take time, time he might not have, just because they have access to learning doesnt mean they will learn what is needed, have the talent to be able to make the same strides he has, nor the motivation.

So far he has uncovered spies left in his town by his siblings and other nobles, he realizes hes not being ignored, they are keeping tabs on him, with his victories and development of the lands he controls its a big enough splash to get noticed if they havent already, especially his support of Witches and actively using their talents openly.

Can he fend off his determined Siblings if they decide to nip him in the bud before he grows too strong? had they decided to get rid of him during the demonic beasts attack what would have happened? there are a few things hes managed to avoid by pure luck imagine if they were successful in destroying the food stores? there are so many lucky instances where hes managed to get the people he needs to make a go of it. What if there was no Anna? shes so convenient that its too convenient if you know what I mean.

I think hes been incredibly lucky, too lucky.

          • Dragrath

I think you hit a major point in a patriarchal society it is extremely hard for a female to compete for the throne with a potential male heir around no matter how unlikely. Roland was no threat to her however any potential heirs of Roland would be a grave threat to her. You have to remember that women were expected to give up the throne as soon as a male heir was born, why do you think the “Virgin Queen” Elizabeth never had children(we know she was certainly no virgin she just used under the radar abortions )

Her assassination attempt on Roland makes perfect sense from that perspective(And it might not have happened if Roland wasn’t male)

          • Anon Ymous

Very insightful. Also, even if the rumours of Roland fraternizing with witches comes to light, with this battle, even the Church will find it hard to convince the two siblings to unite to take down the brother they view as a foolish, pampered prince. They’d just think it was one of his usual shenanigans and leave him for later.

    • mllhild

      Wrong they do.
      1. Just now the second prince lost most of his army of knights and won’t be able to mount a large attack any time soon even if he hears of Rolands independent actions. Actually he won’t be able to even spare the attention since he needs to keep the remainder of his kingdom stable.

      2. With the south of the kingdom independent Roland can trade with them even if the 2° prince does orders a economic blockade to the 4th prince.

      3. The 3°Princess did holds close relation to the southern countries, so Oil will be aviable for purchase in larger quantities in her kingdom.

      4. With this battle the kingdom is now officially 2 kingdoms and the churches plan is advancing well with Greyscale’s northern army dead by demonic beasts, their Knights killed, several thousand freeman soldiers and kights burned to death. The remaining armies split between two factions. If I would be the strategist of the church I would be jumping from joy.

      5. And the 2° prince will be very sensitive about any other insurrection or surprises on the battle field, so one can expect him to lose his cool easily now in the future.

    • Kuq Ku

I can understand that, but these other siblings will have direct impact on our MCs future plans, he is vying for the throne himself. We now have insight into his sister and brother, how they operate, and who would become the more formidable opponent or even potential ally with our MC.

There was a basic intro on them, the youngest sister seems to be the strongest in terms of potential due to her prodigy like status. From this battle we can see who is the strongest, but there are more than one way to win a war, and this is only a battle, sometimes you need to take a few losses to win.

Morale wise Timothys camp took a big hit, but if hes able to learn from it and use it to plan measures against this happening again, we could see a different outcome when next they meet on the battlefield. If hes able to use her own strategies and give up on his prejudices we might see a better fight next time, but who knows.

I find it really interesting, these other siblings are not what they appear, even Timothy was genuinely concerned for his Father, he wasnt even trying to take over, but when things began to gain momentum he could only take advantage of it as best he could.

His sister seemed to have a long term goal already in progress regardless of what their Father set in motion. Which makes me wonder what she had planned. I want to know what happens, I think there is a lot more going on than we think. If you think about it, or want to invest time into thinking about it, this story could get deep lol.

But fair enough not caring about it 😛 there are story arcs in Game of thrones I dont really care about either hehe.

  • MOHLT

it looks like prince is going to loose and is forced to retreat back to Silver City/Valencia/Capital.

  • I am not a spoiler I swear

So if the supposed king lost his entire army due to his failure, would Garcia be the Queen? If so, then Roland is going to wage war against Garcia? Where is the other little sister? Is she a good guy wrt Roland or not? Find out in the next episode of Dra- wait wrong title.

    • Gaspar

I have this crazy theory that the last sister (little one) is with the church, willingly or more likely not (captured). They later Can reclaim that they fight in Her name when they Attack the kingdom and be “legit”. She Can even be a “puppet ruler” in their name (indoctrinated/brain washed by the church with slave witch power)

      • Kuq Ku

I dont think so, shes managed to secure a large chunk of land and capable of defending it, She doesnt seem the sort to be manipulated or captured, and I doubt she would allow herself to be used or become a tool. The church have had to resort to desperate measures to wipe out as much of there “Allies” support troops as they can, that sacrifice they almost made in losing one of their main cities was a huge gamble, it shows they were willing to lose what they had in order to put a huge dent in the resources their “Allies” had. They have a few things in the works to undermine the current monarchy, I wonder if Garcia knows about the fate of the real King. If she is aware the roots she has spread out sounds formidable.

The church are cunning devious buggers, theyre also unpredictable, Im not sure how she would want to use such a nest of vipers or even if she could do it. Its a bit frustrating not knowing more about these siblings, Timothy seems very direct in what he wants, since he was the chosen successor over his older brother.

Since it was revealed what happened to the King, its not even clear that the current situation was part of his plan or not. Im not sure because we dont know much about him! Im glad for these small snippets we get, but it still paints a picture thats hazy at best.

The church havent shown their endgame, and its difficult to understand what they are aiming for, theres so much involved, I hope the author doesnt fizzle out its very interesting! please keep up the good work!

      • BurstThrough

The church’s puppet in the Royal family was actually Garcia as she mentioned being fooled by the church and likely knows what was her father’s fate.
But now she seems hell-bent on rebelling and to show that she allowed an armed force of barbarians into Graycastle(wich is one of the things that doomed the Roman Empire wich is why Timothy is cursing her mentally for it).She is actually as dumb as first brother but is so paranoid and stubborn in this uncertain time that people can regard her as smart at times.

    • Meiwaku

his another sister probably awoke as witch hence she is hiding. will most likely appear after 4th harboring witches becomes widely known.

    • mllhild

Not war, she is to far away. Rather he will start a trade relationship. After all his intention is to advance industrialization and help the witches being accepted by society. Its of no interest for him if he has only a part of the area of the kingdom, as long as it has the necessary manpower and resources.
Of course Garcia wont waste her Black fleet to send it up the river to Bordertown. Probably the ships made for the open sea won’t even be able to climb the river well.

  • Wrandral

Ehhh why can’t i stop thinking that this is a trap too?
